REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Susana Yembise would continue to oversee the settlement of the alleged rape cases reported by female students at Gadjah Mada University. She made the assurance after giving a public lecture entitled "Gender Equality in the Digital Innovation Era in Indonesia" to the Faculty of Geography of Gajah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta, Friday.
"We, the ministry, will continue to monitor this process so that acts carried out in the name of sexual violence must be dealt with according to the law, because there is already a law in place," said Yohana.
According to the minister, her side has coordinated and checked the handling of the event. Based on reports she received from the families of the alleged perpetrators and the victims, the UGM side is still in the mediation process to find out the chronology of the actual cases that occurred.
"I have coordinated with the head of the department here. After checking with the victims and their families, it seems that they are still in the process of mediation. We will later see whether to proceed with the realm of law or not," she said.
Going forward, Yembise hoped that UGM could become a gender-responsive university that is friendly toward women and children.
The PPA Ministry, according to Yembise, has made a gender responsive university model. At the school level, according to her, there are 10,000 child-friendly schools.
"I will start launching a number of gender responsive universities. So it is hoped that in universities there should be no more violence in all forms both for children and women," she said.
A UGM Social Sciences student was suspected of being a victim of alleged sexual harassment by fellow KKN colleagues, the 2014 Faculty of Engineering students.
This event took place when this 2014 batch student took part in the Community Service Program (KKN) on Seram Island, Maluku, in mid-2017. The event was revealed by Balairung Press (UGM Student Press Agency) through a report uploaded on November 5, 2018.
