Central Sulawesi disaster death toll rises to 2,002

Most of the dead victims buried in mass graves.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALU — The death toll from 7,4 magnitude earthquake, which was followed by a tsunami in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi has reached 2,002, based on the latest data on Tuesday (Oct 9). The bodies of victims were partly buried in mass burial and partly by their families.

Based on data from Integrated Joint Task Command Post in Palu, as many as 864 bodies buried in mass grave in Poboya. Meanwhile, in Pantoloan, 35 bodies have been buried in mass grave. Mass grave also dug in Donggala to buried 35 bodies.

Whereas, earthquake and tsunami victims which has been buried by their families were 1,068 bodies. Meanwhile, injured victims reached 4,084 people and 671 other were still missing.

House damaged by the disaster in Central Sulawesi reached 67,310 units. Evacuation team have been trying to the search for victims. The process is scheduled to take place until Thursday (Oct 11).

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale, which was updated by Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to 7.4 occurred in Palu and Donggala regions on last Friday (Sept 28) at 05.02 p.m. local time. This earthquake triggered a tsunami with 0.5 to six meters high on the west coast of Central Sulawesi Province.
